31 years of a pub/bar in Brittany gone up in smoke. Here are photographic mementoes of a socio-cultural icon, the continuation of a bridge between BreizhBrittany & Cymru/Wales, a Brythonic link, with Kernow/Cornwall in the middle that goes back continuously for more than 1600 years. The pub/bar will eventually rise out of the ashes, but in the meantime I now have opportunities to go out visiting, observing and capturing in photographic form pieces of Breton heritage that I call Byn's bits of Brittany: there you are: a pub; religious establishments, mainly chapels, interesting because they encompass both history & art; waterways & bridges, mainly rivers, but also streams and a long arterial canal built by Napoleon Boneparte with its ingenious linking of the rivers with each handing on the baton in succession, running all the way from Nantes to Brest; each chapel had its holy well some of which are marvels to behold, some have disappeared and others need half a day to be discovered hidden among the weeds and thorns; the many megalithic standing stones that proliferate throughout Brittany in their different forms; wells that are only now being blocked up; each hamlet had its communal bread-oven and communal pool for the washing of clothes, only the ovens are on their way back; some fauna but mainly flora of Springtime 2010. I have also included sheets of Breton popular music, including 'Bro Goz(h) ma Z(h)adou', originally 'Mae Hên Wlâd fy Nhâdau', the Welsh National Anthem, which was brought back to Brittany around 1900 by an inspired Taldir Jaffrennou after a visit to the Celtic Congress at Cardiff, translated into Breton and subsequently adopted as the Breton Hymn. The pub burnt down in February earlier this year 2010 and as I'm self-employed I don't qualify for, what I call 'the dole', therefore I am putting all these photos on the market so that I can earn my living until I take back my former employment in 2012. You can suggest anything, but at the moment the form they take is predominately A4 plastic laminated for protection, on the internet at 10 euros to cover VAT & postage, or 15€ under glass. They are also literally on a market stall every thursday morning at Uhelgoad/Huelgoat, Saturdays at Montroulez/Morlaix, occasionally mondays & tuesdays at Gwirliskin & Rostrenn/Rostrenen respectively (when my car is insured & running, petrol allowing, and not raining too hard). Contact by e-mail: bynwalters@libertysurf.fr. Payment can be made directly through Paypal, by e-mail through Paypal, or by cheque to: 5 rue des primevères, 29690 Plouye, Bretagne, or more directly at the market stall.

Postal Order

I've got to sort these photos out, there's definitely a commercial potential on the best of them. I could send a glass framed A4 photo to anywhere in France & Brittany in a post office package for 20 euros. I can go back to the markets for 2 euros a time plus the monthly insurance but I need a market tent or gazebo 3m x 2m costing about 200 euros, I haven't been able to display any photos due to the constant rain and the fact that I need to print more, which I won't do to have them sitting around the house. I am able to print individual photos on order, just tell me which photo you want and I will post it on.

Empty Pub

I understand that by now this may be getting a bit tiresome but I can tell you it's a lot more tiresome for me, anyway somebody asked me to explain my problem so here we go again:
My pub/bar burned down in February 2009 so I've been out of work for almost two years without pay not being entitled to insurance nor dole. There are people who are willing to help me rebuild the pub but I don't own the walls I just run the business, therefore I have to reply to these gentle people that I have nothing to do with the rebuilding, I only come into the picture on getting the keys, probably next May. The pub will have been repainted and electricity installed BUT it will be empty, I will need help to procure tables & chairs; a small coffee machine; music is all important so I will need material such as a small computer to hold my iTunes collection, an amplifier and speakers; a lamp; dart board, and various items to help replace all the lost memorabilia, most of which was unique having been built up over 30 years. So you see, I have plenty of volunteers willing to work for nothing to aid me in the rebuilding, but unless I get help to refurnish I'll be taking over an empty pub.

Figures

I like figures; mathematical, feminine & virtual, so I'm happy that I've reached, and passed 2000 facebook friends; there is no intimate feminine figure in my life, and there hasn't been for a very long time; hopefully the virtual figures, some of them anyway, will translate into welcome customers for chapter 2 of 'Ty Elise' in the not too distant future. Summary at 18 Nov.: Friends number 2006; Ty Elise - 526 (which may rise in the next few months as the re-opening approaches); P for Briton - 99; My Brittany - 86; Music (& poetry) - 85; Welsh & Breton Sport - 57.

Open Doors

One door closes another one opens; the pub burnt down (I always wrote 'burned' then I noticed that my friends were writing 'burnt; when I was small I said 'burnt my finger', later I altered my pronunciation and the spelling to go with it, or vice versa, anyway I digress) I began going for long walks with my camera taking many photos of Brittany, then I started putting them on sale at the markets, not being worthwhile with the cost of petrol, now I can't afford the car insurance, instead I'm researching Welsh sport; Brittonic heritage; and music that comes out of Cymru/Wales & Breizh/Brittany, which I put on to their respective sites I've set up on Facebook, something I wouldn't otherwise have been able to do. Every now & again I glance across to the door and witness a shrew or a mouse or two being sadistically toyed with by my kitten Do(o)do(o), I'v gotten over my worm phobia so I pick up and throw out the ones she brings in. Two days ago I was sitting on the settee with my laptop guess where? listening to the Roy Noble Show, there was something he wanted to know so I tapped a few buttons, found what he was looking for and sent it in, it was gratefully acknowledged and mentioned again the following day which I missed, I know because a friend told me on facebook.

The Big Day but one

The biggest day in Welsh rugby history is already upon us in New Zealand; we've got the youth, the fitness & the urgency, will we be ruthless enough near their line, lack of experience will givel youth its head which could be good or bad depending on which French team comes out, they are famous for their inconsistencies; we can't afford to give the ball away, no loose passes leading to interceptions and discipline is vital in the scrum; for once we have strength in depth, it's exciting to know that we have Hook & the Williams boys in reserve to finish them off if need be.

Friday, 7 October 2011

The last 18 months have been financially very difficult, but paradoxically my quality of life has leaped a hundred fold with the fresh air, the castles, cathedrals, churches & priories, walking in the forests and next to the rivers & canals, my efforts to become a market trader, more time for music and reading poetry, tales of Arthur & Merlin, history, and travelling Brittany taking photos. The pub will be re-opening in the spring, but briefly & directly I need help until then to keep the wolves (solicitors & baillifs) at bay; I need a loan of 750€ now in all urgency and a cushion further on, to split a metaphor, to keep my head above water, no point in having a drowned mine host at the open door of a newly refurbished tavern!

Normalement si tout va bien je vais retourner au bar au printemps/If all goes well I'll be back behind the bar of 'Ty Elise/Chez Byn' in the spring, giving me an objective and bringing a bit of certainty back into my life.
